If you have ever ridden a bicycle you will notice that the first few pedals you make will be a bit difficult but once you set the wheels in motion, pedalling becomes a lot easier, and even when you take your legs off the pedals they will keep turning for a while due to the motion you had initiated.

Inertia is a state of rest when no change is happening. Coming out of this state of rest requires that you take action that will create change. This action could mean different things to different people depending on the state of rest they are trying to come out of, and the direction they want to go when they are in motion.

Have you been in inertia for a while with regards to your business ideas? This article is for you. I hope that by the time you read through, you will have gotten insights into how to overcome inertia and get things moving in the direction of the change you want to see in your life.

Here are the steps that I take to overcome inertia, and I believe they will work for you as well.

Just start

As simple as this seems, it is as effective as can be. Don’t think about starting. Don’t have another chat with your friend or trusted confidant about starting. Just take the leap and start. The question to consider here is, what does starting mean to you? What would starting look like for you? Sometimes, this could be a phone call to that supplier, a meeting with someone you want to join you as a co-founder, spending some time to draft your business model, creating a message or graphic and sharing that with your contacts to let them know you are launching your business. Whatever starting means to you, just get it done.

Create a daily routine

Change thrives where there is a routine. This means that if you must successfully build a new habit or make an activity part and parcel of your life, it’s best to include it as a series of small activities that you can commit to doing daily. Your routine could be to spend an hour or two everyday working on your business idea. Set a specific time for this and be deliberate with what you will spend that time doing.

Keep to the routine

When you create a routine around building your business, stick to the plan. Do your best to ensure your schedule is free at the time you set aside for working on your business so you can focus on tasks related to moving that business forward. I understand that sometimes circumstances might cause you to break your routine. If that happens, don’t let it deter you. Just keep going, and ensure you get back on track as soon as possible.

If for whatever reason you notice that the timing, the ambience, or the approach you’re taking is not convenient or effective for you, feel free to make necessary changes and learn as you go along. Soon enough you will find your rhythm and you will start gaining momentum.

Optimize for growth

Having overcome inertia and gained momentum in your efforts to start and grow your business, it is time to optimize for growth. What does growth look like for your business? How can you go from where you are now to where you envision your business to be? What capacity do you need to build to efficiently handle the changes that come with growth? These are some of the questions to consider when evaluating your business to identify ways you can better position for growth.

Every business requires time and effort to nurture it into a thriving entity. I encourage you to make that commitment today to give your very best towards starting and growing your business.
